Tunnocks Teacake Challenge

By Mrs Delyth Bagley, Head of Food Studies
The theme for this year’s Tunnock’s teacake competition was ‘Culture and celebrations.’ Students were given the opportunity to create a design based on this theme using 1 Tunnock teacake and a selection of standard ingredients (melted white chocolate, food dye, crushed biscuits, icing sugar and some strawberries). Students could bring in 2 additional items from home.
After much deliberation, 8 successful entries were invited to the Food room to create their designs in 50 minutes. Well, done to everyone that participated and thank you to Mr Speakman and Mrs Ward for judging.
1st place goes to Tilly – Year 9. Tilly’s final design was entitled ‘in the end, we are all just people’ and used a mixture of fondant hands (hand made/sculpted by Tilly) and fondant hearts. The judges were impressed by how well Tilly embraced the brief and wish her luck in the national final.
2nd place goes to Eliza – Year 8. Inspired by hot air ballon festivals that take place around the UK, Eliza recreated the ballon using a fondant covered ball, and a Tunnocks Teacake basket which was very innovative.
3rd place goes to Odean – Year 8. Oden celebrated all things Scottish with his Tunnocks Teacake bag pipes. This was cleverly designed and executed using a combination of Chocolate Matchsticks and Fondant.
4th place goes to India – Year 8. India explored the flower festival at Mt Fuji called Shibazakura festival. India was highly creative with her use of melted and powdered chocolate. Small flowers highlighted and celebrated the blooming of Shibazakura flowers at Fuji.
Congratulations to everyone who participated.
