Performing Arts Awards

Ipswich High School celebrated the outstanding achievements of its music, drama and dance pupils at its annual Performing Arts Awards, held last night at The Hayworth Theatre.
The evening was made even more memorable by special guest Katie Hall, the acclaimed musical theatre actress and Les Misérables performer, who presented the awards. Fresh from the stage as Sally Bowles in Cabaret, Katie wowed parents, pupils and staff with a moving rendition of I Dreamed a Dream, Fantine’s iconic song from Les Misérables, bringing many in the audience to tears.
Katie also spoke inspiringly to pupils about her route into musical theatre, encouraging them to make the most of the wonderful performing arts facilities and opportunities available to them at Ipswich High School. Following the event, she was due to hot foot it back to London today to take part in the Royal Albert Hall’s 40th anniversary performance of Les Misérables.
Mrs Angela Chillingworth said: “What a beautiful, moving performance! We are so grateful Katie could take time out of her busy schedule to be with us. I am so proud of everything our pupils have achieved with the performing arts this year.”
Awards were presented across music, drama and dance, with new scholars receiving their badges, and half colours and colours awarded to older students in recognition of their dedication, talent and contribution to the Performing Arts.
Mr Paul Stone, Director of Drama, said: “A fantastic evening celebrating the many achievements of our Performing Arts pupils over the past year.
It was lovely to have the awards and speeches interspersed with pupil performances, leading to an incredible finale from Katie Hall after delivering a highly inspirational speech.”
Ms Rebecca Curtis, Head of Dance, said: “I am so proud of our performers and all their hard work and dedication. Special mention to Rae for dancing their solo so beautifully. I was delighted to recognise the outstanding achievements we have had in dance this year: everything from Chitty to Move It, to pupils dancing on an international stage. I can’t wait for them to showcase more of their dances at the dance show in two weeks.”
The evening celebrated the breadth of talent within Ipswich High School’s Performing Arts community, recognising pupils for their performance, commitment, leadership and service.
