Modern Foreign Languages Week

This year’s Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) Week was a resounding triumph, packed with exciting activities, competitions, and cultural exploration. Students across all year groups fully immersed themselves in the week- long celebration, showcasing creativity, teamwork, and a deepening appreciation for world languages.
The energy kicked off with Year 7 students eagerly taking part in a fast-paced scavenger hunt, Year 8 racing around the school to complete challenges while snapping photos for the “Photomania” competition. Meanwhile, Year 9 embraced the thrill of an “Escape Room” competition, testing their problem- solving skills with language-themed puzzles.
Key Stage 4 students didn’t miss out on the fun either! They got involved with a variety of activities, from singing and writing poetry in different languages to breaking codes and engaging with cultural trivia.
The entire school felt the buzz, and it was fantastic to see such enthusiasm for language learning.
Our school canteen also joined the celebration, offering delicious lunches inspired by cuisines from around the world each day. It was a great way for students to not only taste different cultures but to learn about the countries those dishes came from.
Teachers played an integral role in the week’s festivities by decorating their classroom doors with maps, flags, and stories about the languages they speak and the countries they’ve visited. Many shared personal insights on why learning languages is so important, inspiring students to see how speaking another language opens up doors to new opportunities and perspectives.
The competitions this week were a massive hit, especially the annual Bake Off. Students wowed us with stunning cakes designed around this year’s theme of ‘Peace’. The cake decorations were not only beautiful but also meaningful, emphasizing unity and understanding between cultures.
Additionally, a school-wide Duolingo Challenge saw students and staff racing to improve their language skills online, and we’re eagerly awaiting the final results, with winners and prizes to be announced soon.
Another highlight was the logo design competition for the MFL Department. Students submitted some fantastic designs, and we’ll soon reveal the winning logo that will represent our department for the year ahead.
MFL Week truly demonstrated why learning languages is so valuable – it connects us to new people, new ideas, and new worlds. We look forward to sharing even more language adventures in the coming months! Stay tuned for updates on all the Challenges winners!
