Ipswich High School Year 6 Residential

We are delighted to share highlights from Year 6’s recent residential visit to Willersley Castle in Derbyshire. Set in an impressive 18th-century Grade II listed mansion, the castle is perched high above the River Derwent in Cromford, near Matlock. Surrounded by 65 acres of beautiful grounds and nestled on the edge of the Derbyshire Dales, it provided a truly inspiring setting for a memorable trip.
Throughout the week, the children have shown remarkable growth — both personally and in their leadership skills. They embraced every opportunity with enthusiasm, demonstrating resilience, teamwork and positivity as they stepped outside their comfort zones.
The children took part in a wide range of exciting outdoor activities, including:
• Archery
• Climbing a cliff face
• River tubing
• Kayaking and canoeing
• Axe throwing
• Aero ball
• Zip wire
• Rifle shooting
• Grass sledging
Each activity challenged and encouraged them to support one another, leading to a strong sense of achievement and confidence. In the evenings, the children enjoyed time together around a campfire, sharing stories and toasting marshmallows for delicious s’mores — a perfect way to unwind and reflect on the day’s adventures.
It has been wonderful to see how inspired, happy and successful the children feel. They have returned with lasting memories, stronger friendships and a real sense of pride in all they have accomplished. We are incredibly proud of each and every one of them.
This is what the children thought:
‘Willersley Castle was a lovely setting and we all enjoyed staying in the castle and exploring all the activities.’
‘All the activities were so fun and it was lovely seeing the rolling hills and the beautiful countryside.’
‘I love Willersley Castle because of the picturesque views, the enjoyable activities and the beautiful sunsets.’

‘I really enjoyed Willersley Castle because I was inspired to try new activities and challenges.’
