Outstanding GCSE results mark an exciting new chapter for Ipswich High School

Ipswich High School is celebrating another strong year of GCSE results, with pupils achieving excellent outcomes across a broad range of subjects and the school continuing its three-year upward trend in individual pupil Value Added.
Particularly strong performances were seen in Latin, Classics, French, Spanish, Art, Food Studies and History, while English was another standout subject, with 90% of pupils achieving Grade 5 or above.
The English results follow an exceptional year for the subject at A Level, where Ipswich High pupils achieved outstanding outcomes, ranking amongst the top in the UK.
But, as with the school’s A-Level celebrations last week, Ipswich High is placing just as much emphasis on the individual journeys behind the grades – the confidence pupils have gained, the friendships they have made and the many different paths now open to them.
Dan Browning, Head of Ipswich High School, said, “Results Day is an important moment and there is so much for our Year 11 pupils to be proud of today. These grades represent years of work, perseverance and encouragement from their teachers, families and friends, but they are also only one part of each young person’s story.”
“What makes me particularly proud is seeing how much these pupils have grown – academically, personally and in confidence. They have challenged themselves, supported one another and developed interests and ambitions that will take them in all sorts of exciting directions.”
“We are delighted that so many will continue their journey with us in our growing Sixth Form, but whatever route each pupil chooses, we want them to leave Year 11 knowing that success does not look the same for everyone. Today is about being proud of how far they have come and excited about what comes next.”
Among this year’s individual successes is Astrid, who achieved an exceptional set of GCSE results, with seven grade 9s and two grade 8s, said: “I’m really happy with my results. I’m so pleased I got a 9 in History, as I doubted myself and thought I was going to get a 6! I’m so relieved that all the hard work has paid off. I’m now going to study Maths, Chemistry, Biology and History.”
Ariella, also achieved seven grade 9s, three grade 8s and one grade 7. Myla is also celebrating seven grade 9s, alongside one grade 8 and one grade 7. Myla said: “Getting 9’s in subjects is amazing, so improving from my mocks, I wasn’t expecting it. I’m going to study History, Politics, Economic and Religious Studies. I’m really looking forward to Sixth Form at Ipswich High School.”
Oliver achieved three grade 9s, one grade 8 and five grade 7s. Oliver said: “I think everyone lowers their expectations, then I opened the results and did so much better than expected, and others have too. I’m doing history A level as one of my subjects next year, and I got a 9 in History, so I am really happy”
A growing Sixth Form with different ways to succeed
Many of this year’s GCSE pupils will continue their studies at Ipswich High School Sixth Form, which continues to grow and broaden the opportunities available to young people.
Alongside a wide range of traditional A Levels, the school’s Sixth Form offer includes different options including the BGA programme, where pupils can work towards a degree and provides greater flexibility for pupils whose academic ambitions need to work alongside significant sporting, performing arts or other extracurricular commitments.
This more personalised approach allows pupils to build a programme of study around their individual strengths, interests and future ambitions rather than following a single prescribed route.
The strength of those pathways was demonstrated in last week’s A-Level results, when one in three grades at Ipswich High were awarded A*-A. The school also celebrated 100% success with its Oxbridge applicants and 100% success for pupils pursuing degree apprenticeships. A-Level leavers are now progressing to destinations ranging from the University of Cambridge and other Russell Group universities to degree apprenticeships with major employers including EDF at Sizewell C and OCS. Ipswich High also recorded an outstanding performance in A-Level English, ranking amongst the top in the UK.
Dan Browning added: “Our Sixth Form is flourishing because it increasingly reflects the different ambitions of the young people within it. For some, the destination will be Oxbridge or another leading university; for others it may be a degree apprenticeship, a degree pathway, or a more flexible BGA programme that enables them to combine their education with exceptional commitments outside the classroom. What matters is giving pupils the confidence, support and freedom to find the route on which they can flourish.”
As Ipswich High School approaches its 150th anniversary year, these results mark an exciting moment in the school’s story. This year’s GCSE outcomes have exceeded expectations, reflecting not only the hard work and determination of the pupils, but also the strength of the teaching, support and ambition that surrounds them. Combined with the school’s outstanding A-Level results and continued growth in Value Added, they point to a school moving forward with real confidence and momentum.
