County Athletics Success

By Hannah Harrison, Head of Athletics

Third in the county for our junior athletics teams!

The athletics season has started off with a bang with over 100 pupils in various year groups taking part in the track and field enrichments.

The first competition set off the season last Thursday at Bury St Edmundโ€™s with the County Track and Field Cup. This competition is based on competitors gaining times and distances which earn points that are then added to the teamโ€™s overall score. I believe that it is the toughest competition in Suffolk as competitors are restricted to just two events. Teamwork is vital in order to to gain as many points as possible.
Ipswich High School entered three teams โ€“ Junior Boys, Junior Girls, (both Year 7 & Year 8 combined), and Inter Girls (Year 9 & Year 10).
This year we were very lucky with the sunshine and it enabled some very promising and outstanding results on the day.
Some of the highlights were as follows:
Junior Girls
โ€ข Lara H- winning both her events Hurdles and High jump.
Her high jump being one of the highest scores field events alongside Isla M in the discus.
โ€ข Annabel B was the highest scorer on the track in the 1500m.
Junior Boys
โ€ข Freddie A became the highest scorer for field events and led it in the Javelin of 24. 26m!
โ€ข Kwesi R won his hurdles event.
โ€ข Zac A gaining the highest score for track in the 300m 44.1sec.
Inter Girls
โ€ข Agatha V Was the highest scorer on the track in 14.01 sec.
โ€ข Lily S took the field event highest score on the high jump.
Everyone performed well producing some outstanding results throughout the morning!
The final scores were:
โ€“ Both Junior girls and Junior boys finishing third in the county, and Inter girls finishing sixth!
This was an incredible result for the teams with lots of new PBโ€™s gained too!
A huge well done to everyone involved.
