Celebrating Rosa Weekes

Ipswich High School hosted the second annual Rosa Weekes Prize, a commemorative, oracy-inspired initiative designed to engage local Year 6 students. Following its successful launch last year, the event grew significantly this year, with even more pupils participating and delivering impressive speeches.

The prize celebrates the legacy of Rosa Weekes, who arrived from Nevis in the Caribbean and worked at Ipswich High School for 22 years, beginning in 1962. Rosa personified the values we continue to cherish today, and her contribution to the lives of the many young people who passed through our corridors remains immeasurable. Each year, the competition focuses on a value Rosa demonstrated; this yearโ€™s theme was Perseverance.

Students were tasked with presenting an argument for an individual who embodies this theme. Last yearโ€™s winners, Clifford Road Primary, returned with an excellent entry, but it was Ipswich High School that was ultimately adjudged the winner for their compelling presentation on Brenda Milner. Other presentations offered insightful looks into the lives of figures such as Albert Einstein, Mary Seacole, and Rosa Parks.

Every participant should be immensely proud of their involvement. We extend a special thanks to Max Thomas, Founder of the Ipswich Windrush Society, for his ongoing support. We were also fortunate to have Glen Chisholm, former Mayor of Ipswich, and Katie Farrow of the Ipswich Windrush Society, serve as our distinguished judges. It was a fantastic day of learning for both children and adults alike, and we look forward to welcoming schools back next year.
