A Level English Trip to London

Year 12 Business Enterprise Trip

On Tuesday 12th November, A Level English Literature students attended a series of lectures at the Emmanuel Centre, London. With a theme of โ€˜Love Through the Agesโ€™, the dayโ€™s events complemented the teaching of love poetry, prose and drama from the Elizabethan period to the present day.

Students were privileged to hear from a number of eminent speakers, including Professor Emma Smith, Lecturer in English at the University of Oxford, who led a talk on the interpretations of love in Othello and other Shakespearean tragedies. Dr Michael Meeuwis, from the University of Warwick, spoke on the nature of love in The Great Gatsby, Tess of the dโ€™Urbervilles and Persuasion. Julia Geddes, a senior examiner and moderator, gave students some useful tips and advice on exam techniques and Owen Sheers, poet, author and broadcaster, read and discussed a selection of his poetry studied for the post-1900 poetry examination.

Great fun was had by all.
