The People Behind Ipswich High School – Mr Mark Speakman

At Ipswich High School, each week we will focus on celebrating one member of our community. This initiative will highlight the diverse contributions of both teaching and support staff, offering students, parents and colleagues a deeper appreciation for the people who make the school flourish. This week, we learn more about Mr Speakman, our Director of Curriculum & Achievement.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN AT IHS?
I am into my fourth year at IHS, joining as Head of History in September 2021.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO JOIN THE IHS COMMUNITY?
The opportunity to work in such a wonderful community of people. From the first moment of turning down Nelson’s Drive for my interview, I was wowed, but what was even better, was that the best of the school were the pupils, their families and all the staff that work so hard to make it such a fantastic place to be.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT WORKING AT IHS?
Everything. However, as a teacher, the best bit of every day is working with young people as they engage with and grow in our subjects. Teaching is hard, and to be able to do it in an environment where colleagues can display their passion expertise and love for their subjects with a community of pupils who share that enthusiasm is a wonderful experience.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE MEMORY FROM WORKING AT IHS?
Last academic year’s School Musical of Shrek was something that I will never forget. The quality of the whole production was simply stunning and demonstrated the IHS community at its best – hardworking, determined, talented and supportive.
TELL US ABOUT A PROFESSIONAL SUCCESS STORY THAT YOU’RE PROUD OF.
I love it when I hear from a pupil about how much they are enjoying their day, or week, or term at school. That is when I am most professionally proud, when I think that I’m contributing a small part to that young pupils happiness and education.
WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD AT IHS?
In our 146th year, I can’t wait to be part of the journey the school is on as it heads towards its 150th birthday and to see where IHS is in 2028.
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY DOING OUTSIDE OF WORK?
Spending time with the family and friends, playing and coaching sport. Reading and listening to podcasts on History and Politics.
WHAT IS A DREAM THAT YOU WANT TO MAKE COME TRUE ONE DAY?
I’d love to sail across an ocean in a yacht, or make it into space.
WISE WORDS: IS THERE A QUOTE OR SAYING YOU LIVE YOUR LIFE BY?
All men make mistakes, but only wise men learn from their mistakes – Winston Churchill.
YOUR FAVOURITE SUBJECT AT SCHOOL:
History.
WHAT TYPE OF BOOKS/MOVIES DO YOU ENJOY?
History – fact or fiction; spy & war novels.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE LUNCH AT IHS?
Everyday there is something wonderful to eat, but I have a sweet-tooth and I love their desserts!
