Sixth Form Mentoring Programme

The mentoring programme for Scholars in the Sixth Form allows students to explore their interests beyond the school curriculum and speak to experts in a range of fields.

These have been varied and have included Medicine, Architecture, Law, Fine Art, and Engineering. One student had the opportunity to speak to a top specialist in Equine Internal Medicine which provided a real insight into the profession: both the process of training and the realities of the challenges of the profession. Another Scholar was able to speak to two students at Cambridge, one in their second year reading Music at Trinity College. This was a great way to learn more about life in the university as well as information about the course from the student perspective. Environmental Science is of particular interest to one of our Sixth Form scholars who has aspirations to continue her studies at university. Speaking to a mentor in the field allowed her to gain a clearer understanding of current issues and discuss research methodologies which have also supported her EPQ. Mock interviews provided by mentors specifically for university application preparation has also been highly valuable. A student applying for Engineering at Cambridge was able to have two mock interviews from different professionals in the field, challenging her to tackle problems to demonstrate her quick and logical thought process.

My mentor is both brilliant and inspirational. During the school term we have met over Teams and discussed universities, jobs, skills, and work experience. I have enjoyed learning about the expertise needed to join the world of work as well as getting a great perspective of my mentorโ€™s own experience at universit and, the process of becoming a registered Architect. At the beginning of Year 12, I undertook an EPQ which focuses on the comparison of engineering, architecture, and construction methods of skyscrapers. During which I struggled with options for primary research. I asked my mentor and she kindly offered to ask her colleagues about some surveys I had created. She also advised and directed me to informative resources

Having an academic mentor has been a fantastic insight into my future career as a doctor. Dr Cuvitt has supported me with a great breadth of academic and career support, ranging from my EPQ to interview preparation and discussions on the world of medicine. Overall having a Scholar mentor has been wonderful support and really widened my perspective of the medical field.
