About the Festival
In the Spring Term, dancers from Year 7 and 8 and a Year 13 choreographer took part in the One Dance UK U.Dance National Festival at the DanceEast studios in Ipswich. Known as Aspire Dance Company, our group of students were one of 10 selected teams from over 100 entries from the eastern region to perform at this event.
Following the success of the East of England having a regional platform last year, we were really excited when it was announced the event would be returning to the region. We were delighted to be chosen to take part in the event as it’s a fantastic opportunity for young dance groups to come together and celebrate the great impressive talent that is in the region.
The weekend didn’t disappoint, it was filled with energetic evening performances from local dance groups that showcased a diverse range of dance styles. During the U.Dance regional day, the students took part in a professional workshop with Company Tribe// and a Centre for Advanced Training (CAT) taster workshop. The students also got to rehearse in the DanceEast studios and watch the other groups perform.
The Performance Piece
The dance performed by Aspire Dance Company was based on images from a piece called TutuMucky by Scottish Dance Theatre. The students drew on the ideas of strength, unity and power to help create ideas for movement, which were then used to create the contemporary piece. It took a term of weekly 40 minute sessions for the students to pull the dance together and it’s evident from the video recording that all their hard work paid off. Well done to the performers from Years 7 and 8 and to our Year 13 student who took on the role of assistant choreographer, fantastic work!
The students who attended the weekend found it really inspiring and loved the chance to connect with and perform alongside other local youth dance groups.
