Last week, seven Ipswich High School pupils took part in one of the ski team’s biggest races of the year, the British Schoolgirls in Flaine. The A team consisted of Kathryn B., Annie S. and Maddie S. The B team consisted of Florence E., Sophie E., Alice T. and Elizabeth M.
For the entire B team this was the first time they had raced on snow before. We had two days of training with a coach from Kandahar race team, Ash Breeze. We trained on giant slalom gates and some regular ones too. Some of us had never skied giant slalom gates, we all thought it was great fun.
On Monday it was time to move on to the racing. The first day was the giant slalom, with time for a quick free ski in the middle. We recorded some notable results from this race. Annie came third in the U16 category and third overall. Kathryn came second in U18 category and eight overall. Maddie came 66th overall and 24th in her category. This meant that the A team had come second overall in the giant slalom, narrowly missing out of first place. The B teams had some great results for their first races with Florence coming 44th in her category and Alice 35th.
The top 32 teams then took part in the parallel slalom. This is a knockout event, racing head to head against other schools. We rounded off the day with in third place, a great result.
On Tuesday, we took part in the slalom race. Annie S. came fourth in her age category, this meant she recorded a third overall for her combined results across the two days.
Maddie came 32nd in the under 16s and the B team showed they were a team to watch for the future with some successful skiing with Elizabeth coming 25th in her category (U14) and Alice 32nd.
The B teams then took part in a B team parallel slalom. Our B team was put against a tough competitor, but unfortunately didn’t make it to the next round.
Well done for everyone for their efforts and good luck to Kathryn and Annie for their races later this season.
The ski team train every Tuesday at the dry slope at Ipswich for two hours. We are coached by TJ Baldwin, an ex-World Cup skier. We currently have eight members training with us and during the session we do a mixture of free-skiing, technique drills and gate training.
For the young racers, there is a snow race next year called the Interschools in Aosta, Italy. This is a great introductory race and is fantastic for the younger racers, with a very friendly atmosphere. We also take part in some dry slope races in the summer, which is great way to get ready for the Winter season the following year. The ski team not only is a way to experience racing but we also concentrate profoundly on improving our technique for our own personal achievements.
