Millie’s table design was inspired by an entrance to a “brutalist period” piece of architecture. She has taken the bold rectangular forms and combined them to create a scaffold like structure, as if the legs are temporarily holding up the floor of the room above.
‘It was part of my GCSE coursework, seeing the degree level work was really inspirational’ said the Year 11 pupil.
The Furniture Makers Company was so impressed that Millie, along with her family and other pupils, were invited to the annual Young Furniture Makers’ Exhibition.
Mr Joe Earley, our Head of Design and Technology, said: “We are extremely proud of Millie, and of our many students across the year groups.
The event was an outstanding exhibition of Furniture from GCSE up to Degree level. It was great to see the Young Furniture Makers exhibition being fully supported by the industry and to have Sebastian Conran handing out the prizes made it even more impressive.”
Alex Crofts, Young Furniture Makers chairman, said: “The 2017 Young Furniture Makers exhibition was our biggest yet and proved to be a wonderful celebration showcasing the exceptional young design talent that we have in the UK. I want to say a big thank you to all of our sponsors that helped make the show possible and special thanks to Sebastian Conran for coming to present the awards.”
Sebastian Conran, CEO of Sebastian Conran Associates, said: “I found the student work exceptionally fresh and inspiring, exhibiting extremely high standards of imagination, discernment and craft normally associated with the output of people with many more years of professional experience and expertise.”
